The time accurate computational fluid dynamics approach is used to predict the unsteady flowfield produced by ships experiencing beam (90 degree) winds. The results are compared with both wind tunnel and full-scale data. The importance of grid quality, geometric fidelity, environmental modelling, and validation data are explored. It is found that, in addition to good grid quality, modelling an atmospheric boundary layer is essential for predicting full-scale ship airwake flowfields for beam winds.
