For collecting data about the deep-sea environment, there are basically two main altenatives involved: either shipborn observations which provide information and data transfer in realtime, but are limited with regard to time scale due to the restricted availability and the high operating costs of research vessels, or anchored deep-sea stations which are usually operated in a periodic on/off mode and cannot provide continuous observations for long periods of time due to limitations in operational energy and/or capacity for data storage, and the data are only available after recovery of the system. This article describes an approach to operating a deep-sea station by means of a permanent in-situ cable connection from the shore for power supply to the instrumentation package and data transfer in real time back to shore. A somewhat similar approach has been published recently as a National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored initiative in the United States. The technology presented in this article was developed for the purpose of installing and running a deep-sea neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea that requires large volumes of transparent matter as a detector medium in complete darkness.
