Typically most landing gear components during service experience cyclic loading within the elastic range. An unexpected extreme service condition may induce loading exceeding yield strength of the material causing local micro-yielding. This local plastic deformation changes the distribution of residual stresses introduced to the part by shot peening. By evaluating changes in residual stress using Barkhausen method the part service condition can be assessed. Parts from service were used to correlate residual stress determined by X-Ray diffraction with Barkhausen noise intensity MP. Statistical correlation has been established between surface axial residual stress/weighted mean residual stress and Barkhausen noise intensity. Field procedure has been developed for the inspection and sampling performed on number of parts at various operators. Barkhausen noise inspection has proven to be an appropriate method for detection of extreme service condition through the evaluation of residual stress in landing gear components.
