This paper describes the design and manufacturing of a structural integrated antenna for airborne data link applications. State of the art antenna systems for these applications are mostly realized as mechanically steered center fed reflector antennas or planar micro strip antenna arrays. These types of antennas require large radomes which will lead to aerodynamic disadvantages and a weakening of the overall aircraft structure. The problems caused by the integration of such antennas on aircraft can be solved with an integration of the radiating elements in the primary aircraft structure. This paper presents the results of the work, which has been performed at EADS Deutschland GmbH in cooperation with the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) regarding this now way in antenna integration technology.
