This paper compares the ventilation of metro systems with and without full height platform screen doors (PSDs). Consideration is given to normal operations, traffic congestion and emergencies involving fire. In recent years, the use of full height platform screen doors has gained popularity on underground railways. The main advantages are a reduction in train induced flows in stations and improved control of the metro environment as a whole during normal operations. The latter is particularly important for underground metros in tropical climates where the use of doors can lead to significant economies in cooling. For metros in temperate climates, the use of full height doors necessitates an environmental control system (ECS) for stations which may be seen as a disadvantage. The temperatures in the running tunnels are also higher due to the reduced level of air exchange and may require the use of air conditioned trains. Attention is given to the flows in the stations resulting from the opening and shutting of the doors, and the management of scenarios involving traffic congestion and fire. Consideration is given to a hybrid system with 'one way' dampers at the top of the doors. These can remove the need for a station ECS while allowing control to be exerted over train induced flows in the stations.
