In the study, detailed three-dimensional simulation results are compared with the results of full-scale fire experiments with respect to fire plumes in a large cross sectional tunnel. In addition, structural characteristics of fire plume and smoke were examined. The simulated results correspond well with the experimental results, verifying that the simulator can qualitatively and quantitatively track the behavior of backlayering with good prediction accuracy. In the cases of higher longitudinal ventilation velocity, the fire plume assumed a characteristic structure downwind from the fire source. The plume repeatedly separated and reunited as it flowed along the tunnel walls under longitudinal ventilation. Its period of oscillation lengthened as velocity increased. The results show that the simulator can reproduce the structure of the fire plume. We found that the plume propagated downwind as a wave in the case of a fire under higher longitudinal ventilation velocity so that backlayering did not occur.
