Under funding from the US Department of Transportation's Office of Pipeline Safety, Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, has developed new nondestructive evaluation technology to detect and characterize dent and gouge type defects. This article describes the NLH (nonlinear harmonic) technique and its response to a series of mechanical-damage defects subsequently pressure tested to failure. These data, along with an engineering assessment of failed defects, fractographic investigations, and stress and strain distributions on the pipe surface near the defect derived from finite-element stress analysis, are used to identify NLH-based defect severity criteria that could be used to help rank the relative severities of damage in pipelines.
