This paper presented a harmonic analysis in the traction power supply system which is expanded by adding additional three rectifier substations. The system model with frequency-variant parameters was developed, and the diversity factor of harmonic source currents was introduced. The computer simulations were carried out under different configurations of the traction power supply system (TPSS). It was found in the frequency scan that there was a parallel resonance in the system, which resulted from the shunt capacitance of the cables and the leakage inductance of the intake transformer. The resonant impedance was greatly affected by resistant components in the system, such as transformer and cable resistance. Diversity of harmonic currents is a critical factor for obtaining reasonable harmonic results. However, it is difficult to assess the diversity in a real system. A method based on the measurement and simulation data was proposed. The derived values were used to predict harmonic voltages at the PCC. It was noted that harmonic voltages in the system were much higher than the limits given in IEEE 519-1992. Certain mitigation measures should be considered to avoid possible problems in the future operation.
