A novel method for initial position estimation is presented for an integrated starter alternator interior permanent magnet machine. This technique identifies both the IPM spatial and magnet polarity saturation saliencies of this machine by injecting a high frequency rotating vector carrier signal. Rotor position is estimated from a phase tracking estimator using spatial saliency. Simultaneously, magnet polarity is identified by using the first harmonic of the electrical rotor position due to d and q-axis saturation saliencies in a second positive sequence carrier frame (2Thetac). Experimental results show this algorithm is capable of reliable and fast initial position estimation.
