A DICHROMATE/hydroxide inhibited packer fluid was used in an oil well. After about eight years of production, when the tubing was pulled out during a routine workover, severe pitting and holes were observed on its external surface at the zone exposed to packer fluid. The production history of the well was analysed and detailed laboratory investigations were carried out to establish the reasons of this failure. It was concluded from this study that a change in operating conditions made the otherwise-innocuous environment corrosive for the tubing material.
