The idea of identifying slippery road conditions to improve safety is rather old, but still no commercial system is available. The brake performance monitor (BPM) is a new approach for tire/road friction detection for commercial vehicles. The BPM uses only information from known wheel speed sensors used by ABS or EBS (Electronically controlled Braking System) and other information available on the vehicle's CAN bus. No additional sensors are necessary. The paper is dealing with a common project between WABCO and NIRA Dynamics whose target is to prove the reliability of this function. The output of the BPM shall allow the trucks in automated driving mode to react like a human driver e.g. increase following distances on slippery road surfaces or reduce vehicle speed in dangerous situations. However, the system can contribute to ACC systems (adaptive cruise control) as well or deliver input to an internet-based map with dynamic data on road conditions, to mention a few other applications of the technology. The BPM is an attempt to obtain an estimator for the mu-level between road and tire with no extra sensors. The layout of this prototype system offers the potential to include the software algorithms at a later stage directly into the ABS/EBS. The algorithms will use wheel slip together with traction forces to estimate mu-level. The use of NIRA Dynamics' signal processing expertise together with WABCO's experience in vehicle control systems for commercial vehicles shall allow for best results in a given cost and time frame. The general possibility of detecting low-mu conditions with the approach described above is proven. Since the exact mu level depends on several external factors such as tire type, tire wear or tire temperature it is clear that the method is best suited for tracking changes in friction conditions.
