It is well known that tyre characteristics have an influence on the lateral dynamics of the vehicle. This is particularly significant in the case of trucks. The first vehicle control systems (ESC) for trucks in Europe were introduced in tractors at the end of 2001. These systems control vehicle movement at the stability limit and thus increase the safety of the vehicle. The input for an ESC is the yaw rate, steering angle and the lateral acceleration. This report shows different truck tyre properties and the influence of these properties on modern truck braking and vehicle control systems. The tyre influences the yaw rate particularly during dynamic steering manoeuvres. The lateral acceleration is influenced by the tyre mainly under constant steering angles. In contrast to passenger cars, trucks have different tyres on the front and rear axles. Furthermore, trucks usually have twin tyres on the rear axle. As a result of these factors the tyre characteristics on the front and rear axles are different. The curves show that the front axle requires a smaller slip angle than the rear axle. It is thus possible that an unsuitable tyre combination could have a considerable effect on the yaw movement of the vehicle. Consequentially, for vehicles with ESC, this could lead to a premature activation of the vehicle control system although the vehicle is still far away from its stability limit. The calculations were carried out for two tyres that showed the largest difference in lateral characteristics. The difference between the various yaw rates can be clearly seen in the curves - the yaw rate of the vehicle with an unsuitable choice of tyres can be twice as high as with the best yaw rate combination. This means an earlier or later regulation of the vehicle control system.
