It is expected that future planetary exploration missions will have as objective the acquisition of surface samples in rough and unknown areas, for in situ analysis or for their return to Earth laboratories. This paper introduces the conceptual design of an autonomous planetary landing system that uses a LIDAR as the main surface sensor. When coupled with an "intelligent" navigation software, it is demonstrated that the LIDAR is capable of detecting hazardous areas, identifying safe landing sites and providing the necessary navigation data to allow autonomous guidance and control of the Lander to the safe site. The autonomous navigation function is described in some detail. Numerical results, using a realistic simulator, illustrate the performance of the navigation software.
