The effect of Ti/C ratio on oxidation resistance of hot-dip aluminum-coated low C steel sheets has been investigated. Further, a high performance new hot-dip aluminum-coated steel sheet with the same high strength at elevated temperatures as 'HTHS' (High-Temperature High-Strength hot-dip aluminum-coated steel sheet) and the same formability at room temperature as 'HTOR' (High-Temperature Oxidation Resistant hot-dip aluminum-coated steel sheet) is described. The results show that in order to obtain good oxidation resistance, Ti/C ratio must be over 10. In hot-dip aluminum-coated low C steel sheets, Fe-Al alloy layer exfoliates from substrate at a temperature over 600 deg C. Stabilization of solute C by addition of Ti in low C and in ultra low C steels prevents exfoliation of Fe-Al alloy layer at temperatures of over 600 deg C and improves oxidation resistance. Addition of Si and Mn increases strength at room temperature. Addition of Nb instead of Si and Mn is effective to increase tensile strength at elevated temperatures without decreasing elongation at room temperature. Based on the above results, a new high performance hot-dip aluminum-coated IF-steel sheet (ultra-low C, 0.15 % Ti and 0.1% Nb) has been developed, which has excellent oxidation resistance and high strength at elevated temperatures and excellent formability at room temperature.
