The solutions for telematics already provided by companies like Siemens AG include traffic control systems, driver assistance systems, fleet management, toll collection as well as fare management and railway automation. By telematics, not only efficiency is increased by making better use of limited road infrastructure. Comfort, safety and security are also enhanced, because features for adaptive distance and lane control, automatic braking and warning systems, automatic emergency calls and tracking of stolen vehicles belong to the telematics sector as well. In spite of the high potential for telematics in road transport, we still have to make clear its benefits, especially as we rely on the willingness of the end-user to pay for additional services. We have to show the profitability of these systems for various target groups - in fact all participants of traffic. The commercial vehicles and fleet management sector are already providing excellent proof of the potentials of vehicle and infrastructure based systems. As one of the leading suppliers of information technology for automotive application, Siemens VDO Automotive is in the forefront of promoting development in telematics. This does not only refer to the ergonomic improvement of the human-machine interface in passenger cars and commercial vehicles, but also to offering additional web-based services. The target is to supply more value to OEM customers and drivers by the intelligent application of information technology, software and electronics and to exploit the huge market potential. This requires, however, a new approach to R+D and engineering, to fulfil the need of integrating a rising amount of new functionalities in communication and information technology into the car. Modular platforms, based on standardised hardware and software, are meeting this challenge. One example is Siemens VDO's Top Level Architecture (TLA), an open hardware and software platform concept. TLA is an important cornerstone for further progress in telematics in the automotive industry, because it is directed at increasing customer benefit. Next to a political climate fostering innovation in road transport without too many restrictions, this orientation on the customer's needs is the precondition for making telematics a success.
