Grupo Antolin-Ingenieria SA has developed a simplified way of making a self-supporting decorative roof liner for automobiles. In US Patent 6423655, the company describes a single blockliner that is moulded to an outer, decorative layer that should look and feel good. The liner itself serves to provide sound absorption. The liner is a sandwich construction comprising three layers made from polyester fibres that serve in much the same manner as previously used glass fibre and/or polyurethane foam layers. Production is achieved by heating the three support layers and simultaneosly moulding them to the desired shape. The main element is a central layer made from short staple polyester that may be thermo-fusible, solid or even hollow. On either side of this are placed two identical layers of fleece - made from short staple thermobonding fibres and so creating a block or sandwich forming the outer layers with the inner core layer. To this is added a lightweight decorative layer. The union of the layers is achieved by preheating at a temperature that melts the thermobonding fibres in these layers.
