By the term sorting one understands the separation of a material mixture into two or several products according to different material characteristics in the preparation technology. The questions if an old process like picking can be the answer to the problems of the sorting of NF-metals has to answered with 'yes'. But not the handpicking itself has the possibilities to solve actual processing or recycling problems. New automatic picking devices with sensors or combinations of different sensors can guarantee the ability to separate a multiplicity of feeds according to divers material properties in the fields of mineral processing and recycling. Within the framework of this paper the fundamental principles of picking, both the 'old' handpicking and automatic successors have been regarded. In this context the former and actual fields of application for both processes are mentioned. One of the typical separation tasks is the separation of NMSF (nonmagnetic metal shredder fraction). This material often is treated in heavy media plants representing wet density separation processes. This method proves to be expensive and losses of metal during storage or transport have to be expected by oxidation. Moreover, the products from heavy media processing often have to be controlled and sorted by hand picking later in the process because replacement of conventional separation methods by automatic picking systems is the main goal of many developing companies and research institutes. Regarding recently developed automatic picking machines indicates that multi sensor controlled devices are improving the separation efficiency for a variety of different input materials. Thus, the combination of conventional sorting methods with new technology will increase grade and recovery of the products from recycling as well as from primary raw material dressing processes. Moreover, materials which can not be processed yet may be a source for new products in the future using high tech separation technology.
