A new method for the HEV(hybrid electric vehicle) component sizing based on the estimation of the fuel-economy improvement of a HEV compared with a baseline ICV under random driving cycles will be presented. Using this method, the relative fuel-economy improvement from hybridization without the detailed simulation can be evaluated . These results can be used to select the appropriate engine, motor, and battery size. For this purpose, first, the ICV(internal combustion vehicle) engine will be defined as operating at only one point corresponding to its optimal efficiency. This assumption was found to be quite reasonable. Subsequently, this idea will be extended and it will be assumed that the engine of a parallel HEV operates at two points, discharging and charging points, which can be selected to satisfy the energy balance relation, i.e., to make the total consumed electric energy from the battery in discharging mode to be equal to the total accumulated energy into the battery in charging mode. Secondly, by using these assumptions, the fuel-economy improvement ratio alpha of a parallel HEV will be defined which is a function of two nondimensional variables, the discharging time over total time, and the engine power in discharging over average required power in driving. Finally, a five-step procedure is developed for obtaining the 3-D fuel-economy improvement ratio map, alpha-map, according to HEV component sizes in random driving cycles which are represented by the average required power.
