While pollutant emission of Sl engines have reached very low levels, fuel consumption has not been reduced in the same way in the past years. One possibility to improve on this situation is to use information provided by radar ranging devices (which are already available today in some luxury cars) to optimally approach leading vehicles. This paper analyzes such fuel optimal rendezvous maneuvers for passenger cars using optimal control theory. With the radar ranging devices the distance and the velocity of the vehicle in front may be estimated. This data combined with local top speed information obtained through GPS-based navigation systems is sufficient to estimate the future speed trajectory of the leader vehicle and to optimize the acceleration of the follower vehicle with respect to its fuel consumption while meeting drivability requirements. The results are obtained using simplified yet realistic descriptions of the vehicles and their IC engines. Both the mathematical arguments leading to and the physical interpretations deriving from the optimal solution are shown. Implementation issues (computational burden, convergence, feedforward versus feedback, etc.) are discussed as well.
