System and method for defining an area of operation for a vehicle 100 are disclosed, the arrangement using sensor data of an environment surrounding the vehicle to define a boundary 50, a first operation zone 51 for the vehicle being defined by the boundary. The first zone omits obstacles 54 and unsuitable terrain56. The system taking user input of a user defined boundary 58 and the control system adjusting the first operation zone in dependence of the user defined boundary to define a second zone 51 which is based on the first zone and the user defined boundary. The sensor data may be from plural sources such as imaging means or a laser scanner. The first zone being defined as a region in which the system is confident that the vehicle can operate i.e. that the ground is drivable. The system arranged to request user input data if the first region defined from the sensor data is insufficient to perform the selected manoeuvre.
