This paper introduces a series hybrid vehicle developed for city bus. The configuration of the HEV's drive system is described, the gasoline engine, an ac generator and a DC PM motor are arranged in series. The DC PM motor with rated power of 35kW and peak power 65kW is used to propel the bus, the generator is a AC synchronous motor and has a rating of 20kW. Under low load operating conditions, only the drive motor is used, it is as same as a battery powered EV. Under high load operating conditions, both the drive motor and generator are used, as the generator only provides mean electric power, so a set of auxiliary battery is used to supply or receive the rest electric energy, in this case it is operating in HEV. When the HEV is operating, coordinating control among the ICE, generator and motor is the key to achieve maximum efficiency and lowest emission. The paper proposes a kind of system control version, which can meet different operation situations. The control role is to limit the auxiliary battery set within expected range of state of charge (SOC). As the determination of SOC is difficult, so a simplified battery voltage detection and control system is adopted in the practical HEV system. A block diagram of the SHEV control system is given and its principle is described in detail. A 21-seat SHEV mini bus prototype was developed, one year testing operation confirmed that the control method proposed in this paper is valid and practical. Some experimental results were given out, but it still has some problems need to improve.
