Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is developing fuel-flexible fuel processors, capable of operating on a variety of hydrocarbon fuels, for automotive fuel cell systems. Performance data on a 25-kW thermal (10-kW electric equivalent) partial oxidation reformer operating on iso-octane and gasoline is presented. The fuel processor incorporates a novel autothermal reforming catalyst that can achieve the conversion of hydrocarbon fuels to hydrogen at much lower temperatures and in a simpler process than can conventional catalysts. This catalyst has been incorporated into a bench-scale integrated fuel processor. The prototype fuel processor also integrates the unit operations (vaporization, heat exchange, etc.) and processes (reforming, water-gas shift, preferential oxidation reactions, etc.) necessary to produce the hydrogen-rich gas (reformate) that will fuel proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Tests were conducted with iso-octane and gasoline. The results showed that a product gas containing up to 43% hydrogen on a dry basis could be achieved for iso-octane, and slightly lower yields were achieved with sulfur-bearing gasoline. Furthermore, the CO content in the product gas could be reduced to below 1% using ANL's air-stable water-gas-shift (WGS) catalyst. These results demonstrate the feasibility of a sulfur-tolerant, catalyzed, lower-temperature partial oxidation reformer that has the potential to be compact, lightweight, have rapid transient response, and be quick-starting.
