Among the fuel cells, Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC) have been considered as a promising energy sources for electric vehicles because of the high energy density of methanol and the ease in refueling. The system efficiency of the DMFC system is supposed to be dependent on the operating conditions such as power generation density, temperature, fuel feed, ambient pressure. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the performance of the DMFC system under different conditions for its optimum design as the driving source of vehicles. In this paper, we designed the gas-feed and liquid-feed DMFC systems and calculated their system efficiencies and power densities. The driving ranges of the DMFC systems were calculated for a constant speed mode and 10.15mode. The system was assumed to supply a maximum power of 50 kW. A virtual electrolyte and the Pt/ Ru catalyst on carbon were used for the estimation. The DMFC system was evaluated under operation conditions at the temperatures of 80, 200 Cel with the fuel gas composed of 100% of methanol saturated vapor pressure with the steam/Carbon ratio of 1. For comparison, a liquid feed DMFC with a methanol concentration of 1 M was also evaluated. The results indicate that the system of gas-feed / 200 Cel showed the most economical driving distance of 51km/kg at 10.15 mode which is about two times higher than that of liquid-feed / 200 Cel.
