The intention of this work is to introduce an extended version of a field oriented control algorithm to drive an induction machine in a traction drive system in a wide speed and torque range with high efficiency. Linear control design methods yield excellent results if the behaviour of the system is essential linear. Unfortunately, most technical systems, especially all electrical machines, are nonlinear. The main goal is to develop an accurate, non-linear mathematical model of the a.c. machine first for simulation and second to develop an accurate speed observer. To enhance the accuracy of the models, electromagnetic non-linear effects are introduced. The properties of the models and the algorithm will be verified for a standard converter machine system on a test-bench. The presented control structure can be adapted to induction machines up to several kW.
