This paper describes the overall design, integration and preliminary testing efforts for a hybrid-electric delivery van with a Capstone 30kW micro-turbine APU. The design of this vehicle's propulsion system is simple. The APU uses CNG fuel, and the drive system is a robust air-cooled system, which addresses simplicity and lowers cost. It uses very efficient AC induction, vector controlled motors for traction and generation needs. The hybrid control is performed by an 'APU supervisor', which uses CAN-BUS to communicate with the traction motor controller and RS-232 to communicate with the Capstone micro-turbine controls. The 'APU supervisor' calculates State-of-Charge (SOC) while synchronizing the different hybrid control algorithms without the use of external control interfaces like programmable logic controls units (PLCs). Low operational cost is expected by the low energy consumption of the drive system (no gearbox) in addition to having high efficiency on the capturing of energy from the APU and optimum energy management. The energy system of the van is very low cost and properly managed is expected to have excellent life. The survivability of the energy management system will be the focus of the extended inservice testing that this vehicle will undergo after the completion of this program.
