For the last couple of years Scania AB as well as ZF Friedrichshafen AG have been working on the topic of alternative propulsion systems for city buses. Scania as the bus builder has integrated a range of driveline concepts into modern bus designs with the primary purpose of building up the necessary knowledge within the Scania organization to handle the integration of such new technologies in future products. This year a modem Scania midi city bus equipped with a hybrid electrical propulsion system with fuel cell energy supply was created. This new concept bus represents the advantage of combining the flexibility and performance of hybrid electrical propulsion systems with new bus designs. Utilization of fuel cell technology as an energy source, instead of a diesel engine, upgrades this concept vehicle from ULEV to ZEV level and furthermore enables even more improvements in terms of propulsion system efficiency, noise, vibration and comfort. In this recent project a driveline prototype of ZF Friedrichshafen was used. This driveline with the brand name ZF EE-Drive is developed to demonstrate that ZF Friedrichshafen will also be a player in this new technology. The driveline in principle can be used for different types of energy sources such as diesel-electric, hybrid-electric or fuel cell systems. The experiences from the Scania hybrid fuel cell bus will help to design the propulsion systems of the future and indicate the dependency of this new technology in future bus concepts.
