Hydrogen is the ideal means of storage, transport and conversion of energy for a comprehensive clean-energy concept. Regarding the use of hydrogen as fuel for the zero-emission vehicle, the main problem is the storage of hydrogen. Metal hydrides offer a safe alternative to storage in compressed or liquid form. A new catalyst for the hydrogen sorption reaction of magnesium, i.e. Nb2O5, is presented in this paper, which is superior to all other previously investigated catalysts. At 300 deg C, absorption of 7 wt.% is possible within 60 s and desorption is facilitated within 130 s. Superior kinetic improvements are also achieved at reaction temperature 250 deg C. Absorption is almost as fast as at 300 deg C, while desorption requires only 10 min. The mechanism of catalysis is not clear yet. However, metal oxides, in which the metals can have multiple valencies, seem to be most efficient. Therefore, the catalytic effect is attributed to electronic exchange reactions with hydrogen molecules, accelerating the gas-solid reaction.
