Since the invention of the motorcar more than 100 years ago the development of our society was very strongly stamped through the possibilities of the individual traffic. A key function to serve the mobility demands has the combustion engine that operates with liquid, fossil fuels representing a dominant drive source in cars. Using a fuel cell to transform chemically bounded energy in electrical energy, to drive the vehicle with an electric engine, a really load-carrying alternative ot the internal combustion engine seems to be found. In this contribution should be pursued, whether it will come to a complete substitution of the internal combustion engine by fuel cell systems with electrical engine or not. The answer is: exhaust gas emissions are no longer a strong reason to look for alternative powertrain solutions, because today and especially future internal combustion engine will emit extremely low amounts of pollutants. But if we look to the year 2015, about 5 % of the passenger car production will be powered by a fuel cell system. This will be true, if some major development problems related to the fuel cell operation in real world conditions can be solved, the system costs can be reduced to twice of an internal combustion engine and the over all efficiency of the fuel cell powertrain is significantly better than an internal combustion engine powertrain. Especially the last boundary condition depends to the fact, that the internal combustion engine has still great technical potentials to increase the efficiency in fuel comsumption.
Fuel cell or internal combustion engine, will it really be an "or" in future powertrains
