The basic advantages and concepts behind x-by-wire have been summarized with its related applications and related technology implications. It has been shown that the technology of by-wire is already widely used even within the automobile - introduced almost unnoticed by the consumer. Further applications have been outlined that can benefit from a smooth migration towards by-wire control that in essence provides greater flexibility and opens doors for more efficient partitioning, but requires significant substantiation in advanced development methodologies and interface definitions. The challenges have been mapped to silicon level and semiconductor solutions presented to support these approaches. Using the concepts of smart partitioning consequently across the entire system from vehicle level over network architecture towards electronic control unit (ECU) and even component partitioning has the potential of substantial cost savings. This ultimately will further support usage of application specific standard product (ASSP) components for high volume optimization with sufficient scalability to still efficiently extend the higher range lower volume applications.
