FlexRay allows designers to build systems that exactly meet automotive industry requirements. Examples include building up applications to increase active safety in vehicles like support of electronic stability via the braking system combined with steering activity or other chassis control systems. The control data bus systems presently used in vehicles have reached their limits of performance. The referenced applications make even greater demands on the communication. The technical specification of FlexRay was derived from the requirements specifications of the OEM core partners and supplier companies, utilizing as well the expertise of the semiconductor core partners within the consortium. The broad range of development partners guarantees the availability of design tools and analysis tools, as well as tools to allow a closed loop development process. OSEKtime is the perfect operating system to allow a strict time management in the applications, but still allowing the necessary flexibility which FlexRay also provides. FlexRay communication controller and FlexRay physical layer will be realized in silicon at the right point in time. The partners are on the way to prepare their systems for the use of this technology. Projects for future by-wire applications, restraint systems and development of system architectures with FlexRay as backbone network already started. Bosch will provide system solutions with well scaled and organized architecture making use of known CAN based technology together with advanced communication facilities based on FlexRay. Both electronic control units as well as software development are going to be optimized for this purpose.
