A brake by wire research vehicle prototype was developed and equipped with an electro-hydraulical brake (EHB) and an electrical active pedal feel emulator. With this device, the relationships between brake pedal force, pedal travel, and vehicle deceleration are fully adjustable and its technical possibilities allow for studying a wide range of braking configurations in one common environment (seat, pedal geometry, etc.). The brake pedal characteristics and the associated deceleration were modified by software in order to investigate the brake pedal feel by collecting varying driver sensations in a decelerating vehicle. The dynamic parameters of vehicle deceleration as being friction brake pad relating to temperature, patterns of pad wear, etc. are another source of variability. In order to eliminate these factors of variability, the braking system of the vehicle was controlled by deceleration instead of pressure. 11 technical parameters were tuned (7 for the force/travel pedal relationship and 4 for the deceleration/travel relationship). A Plackett-Burman design of experiments was used to generate 12 unique braking laws. These laws were evaluated by a sensory descriptive analysis panel on seven criteria. Partial least square (PLS) analysis was used for data treatment sorting out the most influential technical parameters on brake feel. As a result, a software application, able to predict brake feel by using technical parameters, was implemented.
