The optimal operation of a hybrid powertrain was calculated with a newly developed optimization strategy. The size of the electrical engine was varied to obtain information about the optimal rating. Two different driving cycles, the European EUDC and the American FTP72, were supposed. The optimal rating of the electric motor requires a maximum power of 12 to l6kWs. The maximum power is needed mainly for regenerative braking of the vehicle. The ratio of load below 8 kWs amounts up to 18.5 % of cycle time, but is short term only. So a smaller sized engine which allows overload operation would be preferable. The rated speed of the engine was set to 2000 rpm at the gear's input shaft. A variation of this value did not result in better fuel consumptions.
