The solutions for realizing the wider detection region in the FoV (Field of View) and the near range have been proposed on the basis of the electrically scanned automotive radar already developed. The FoV can be widened using the beam forming technique to the target search under the low SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) condition. In addition, the minimum detection range can be shortened using the method of eliminating the detection error peculiar to FMCW (frequency-modulated continuous wave) radar for the close target. Moreover, the experimental radar has been developed to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. The experimental radar accomplishes the FoV of 40 degrees in azimuth and the minimum detection range of 0.5 m. As compared with the electrically scanned automotive radar already developed, the FoV is widened by twice and the minimum detection range is shortened by one tenth. The automotive radar with the wide detection region will open up new vistas on the realization of the driver assistance systems, such as stop & go system, collision warning system and collision mitigation system.
