The use of natural fibers as reinforcing filler in thermoplastics is a relatively new innovation and has great potential to replace glass fiber products in automotive industry. However, most of the research in this area has been focused primarüy on flax fiber alone. In the first part of this research work, the hemp fiber non-woven mats have been used exclusively in combination with polypropylene matrix to study the mechanical properties of NMT (natural fiber mat thermoplastic) without using any binder aid. Film stacking method was used and the results showed that hemp based NMT have compatible or even better strength properties as compared to conventional flax based thermoplastics. A value of 63 MPa for flexural strength is achieved at 64 % fiber content by weight. The influence of compression ratio on mechanical properties and density of NMT is also reported in this study. A definite trend in increase in strength is observed with corresponding increase in compression along with a much more uniform density profile. In second part of the study, a unique combination of loose hemp fibers, non-woven mats and polypropylene films was ernployed in film stacking method to evaluate strength properties and economic irnplications. Same amount of fiber content, 64 %, was maintained in final NMT by replacing 78% mats with loose fibers. Preliminary results show better mechanical properties especially in terms of impact energy, which is 50 to 100 % higher, compared to different mats-alone and polypropylene combinations. Further, a net saving of 40 % in fiber cost is anticipated by replacing 78 % non-woven mats with equivalent amount of loose fibers. Overall results of this study indicate that hemp based NMT can have very effective utility in auto applications where high specific stiffness is required.
