This realization demonstrates the feasibility and the performance of brush DC motors made with a soft magnetic composite. It is shown that it is possible to efficiently operate an armature with a low number of slots at 42 V with a power of 180 W if a multi-layer concentrated winding is used. The performance of this kind of winding is similar to the performance of the classical structure in terms of current commutation, because the number of simple coils in each parallel path of the winding is high. An interesting reduction (near 50 %) of the copper volume has been obtained. The torque to motor volume ratio and torque to copper volume ratio are higher than in the classical structures. With such structures, the total production cost is also minimized. An armature with a small number of slots is well adapted to the use of SMC (Soft Magnetic Composite) material and to a direct pressing process in a single operation. A concentrated winding is easier to realize and the duration of the winding realization process time is minimized by the reduction of the number of coils to wind. These DC motor structures can be also used over a wide power range.
