The influences of braking system faults on vehicle dynamics were investigated in a hydraulic brake test stand. The following four faults were installed: brake-fluid loss (leakage) and air-blisters in the front and in the rear right wheel brake cylinder. The influence on the vehicle behavior was investigated by measuring the yaw rate changes for a steering wheel angle and by measuring the required steering wheel angle for an yaw angle of zero. Also the deviation of the vehicle from its desired course and the increased brake distance caused by brake-circuit failures were calculated. Small faults in the brake system cause only negligible effects on the vehicle dynamics compared to effects of changes in road surfaces or a small shift of center-of-gravity of the vehicle. However, also small faults have to be detected and the driver has to be warned before big faults occur.
