The paper presents a new approach to an electronic safety concept based on the dual-sensor strategy by direct detection of the collision severity, i.e. the crash-pulse induced velocity change delta v. Besides a standard analogue acceleration sensor the Delta-V-Safety sensor (DVS sensor) is used which detects the crash-pulse induced change of velocity. This sensor is principly based on a magnetic induction system with moving magnets in a measuring coil providing an analogue output voltage. The DVS sensor recognizes a real crash collision event by its characteristic signature which is used - together with the analogue signal from the acceleration sensor - to initialise the firing circuits of the restraint system. The full sensor design is derived from the new computational virtual design by use of a physical sensor model described by a set of design parameters. The sensor characteristics behaviour is studied under real crash conditions by use of the computational real crash method (CRC). Marginal response requirements, method of crash detection, the virtual sensor design, DVS sensor output characteristics, real crash DVS output signature are outlined in the paper. The DVS sensor provides the following advantages: - signal discrimination between frontal and rear impact scenarios, - frontal/rear crash sensitivities may be selected individually, - capability of sensor diagnosis by electromagnetic self-test mode, - compact-design potential suitable for PCB mounting.
