Laboratory studies on hardness, microhardness, microstructure and tribological properties of diesel engine T359E laser-hardened crankshaft bearing journals, valve shaft journals and cams, valve lifters and timing gear system elements made of 40H or 45 steel and a gray low-alloy cast iron were performed. The results of tribological and engine broke tests evidenced a beneficial effect of the thermal laser-treatment on the wear resistance of the studied engine elements. The abrasion wear decreased by 1.5 times to 2 times in comparison with abrasion wear of the untreated elements. (Surface Treatment '2002, 5th Polish Sci. Conf., Czestochowa Kule, PL, Sep 18ß20, 2002)
