Driver assistant systems are supported by an increased availability of actuator technologies such as brake-by-wire, shift-by-wire and steer-by-wire. An attractive and well-defined prime candidate for assistant functions is automatic precision parking. This contribution starts with an outline of different possibilities for driver support in parking situations and presents an appropriate sensor concept. Moreover, different subtasks, e.g. finding parking spaces, path planning, and position control are derived. Finally, a prototype system is presented and results are given: The most comfortable and preferred approach is a completely automatic parking assistance system. In this scenario an electronically controllable steering device and shift-by-wire are needed. A new sensor concept for environmental data acquisition and a system concept realising several typical parking situations was established by an autonomous parking concept: The system takes over the complete parking process, supervised only by the driver. This complete concept has been tested and demonstrated, and various error sources were isolated. An demonstration example for backward parking is shown in a photo sequence where the driver activates the system while driving along the road. After the parking space has been detected the driver stops the car and the parking orientation is chosen. The driver leaves the car and activates the parking manoeuvre by holding down a button on the de-energization remote. The car follows the planned path under lateral and longitudinal control and stops after the parking position has been achieved.
