Vehicle-centric telematics services aim to improve the customer experience related to vehicle operation and maintenance and to help improve product quality by utilizing vehicle diagnostics and performance data throughout the lifecycle of the product. For example, sensor and controller diagnostics data can help development engineers better understand field problems created by increasingly complex vehicles. Field data can also help quality engineers to detect design problems and production and supplier related problems earlier. In addition, diagnostics and maintenance data can help improve aftersales repair and maintenance processes, for example, by providing repair leads to the repair technician. The data can also be used to create more customerfriendly maintenance service, e.g. by supporting service scheduling. Vehicle data may even used to develop predictive diagnostics algorithms and systems that help avoid catastrophic failures and expensive repairs overall. The frequent acquisition of vehicle data via telematics and its analysis by back-end systems allow car manufacturers to introduce new services and to improve internal vehicle lifecycle processes. This paper describes the technical concept and prototypical implementation of a vehicle condition monitoring system for future passenger cars.
