One type of transmission that offers an infinitely variable conversion range and sufficient control capability to optimise the engine operating condition is the 'power split' transmission. Power split transmissions have been used for several decades in off-road equipment such as wheel loading shovel, excavators and fork lift trucks. For passenger car applications an infinitely variable conversion range, high internal efficiency and good control capability give the potential for minimising the fuel used by a vehicle in which the drive train is a simple combination of engine-transmission-wheels. The ideal transmission system for the passenger car of the future is one that is efficient, fully automatic, preferable infinitely variable, having the capability of being compatible with varying degrees of hybridisation and yet be capable also of direct replacing existing systems. In this article an electric power split transmission (EPS) is described that is able to meet all these criteria. The correct combination of 2 epicyclic gear trains and 2 switched reluctance electric machines provides a very attractive and cost effective transmission EPS which is suitable for cars of all sizes. In its basic form it does not require any battery backup, but can generate and make use of electric energy once Hybrid or Semi Hybrid Vehicles are generally accepted. The complete operating range of any car can be provided by this transmission. The power flow through the electrical machines is only a fraction of the mechanical flow and comes close to zero at 2 node points, which move within the drive range, depending on engine speed input. Furthermore, the very high speed range of the EPS transmission can force the engine to run at the lowest possible speed for any given power requirement and its very fast ratio changing abilities make it respond almost instantly to any power required by the driver. The paper presents the function and design of EPS transmissions, also the results of simulation test for discussion, to show how substantial fuel savings can be made and how the drivability and performance of true cars can be enhanced.
