Automated hydraulic equipment is used at Boeing to install index head 7050 aluminum alloy rivets for assembly of upper and lower wing skins to stringers. Rivet installations are fatigue and fluid light critical. It has been shown that the capability of the machinery to maintain alignment of the rivet upset tooling is critical in meeting engineering fatigue requirements. This paper describes the effect that misalignment of the automated hydraulic equipment has on the fatigue life of specimens representing typical airplane wing structure. In a few instances, index head rivets made from 7050 aluminum alloy have been marked by the button dies during the installation process. The rivet die marks were primarily caused by automated hydraulic wing riveting machines being operated out of alignment and by the use of rivets with excessive grip length. 7050 rivets in 1/4, 5/16, and 3/8 inch diameters, along with various types of dies and amounts of damage, ware studied to determine the effect that these variables had on fatigue of wing panel structures.
