Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) proposed friction stir welding (FSW) as an alternative for butt and corner welds on the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV), as a means to pass the required ballistic shock test and reduce the overall cost of the device. The performance of friction stir welds in a combat vehicle application was confirmed via the project initiated by the Office of Naval Research through the National Center for Excellence in Metalworking Technologies.
