The spalling test was conducted on four kinds of railroad wheels in order to clarify the effect of material on the spalling properties of railroad wheels. As a result, the following results were found: 1. The maximum depth of the flat and the mean thickness of the white layer can be evaluated with little deviation by using a parameter 'the flat generation energy'; 2. The maximum depth of the flat is independent of the material, but the mean thickness of the white layer is changed by hardenability of material; 3. Cracks initiate near the flat after the RCF test. These locations of cracks corresponded with the points where the impact loads generate; 4. The impact load increased when the circumferential distance of the flat (from front edge to the impact load point) increased. However, when the depth at impact load point increased, the impact load decreased even if circumferential distance was large; 5. A white layer was observed at the initiation point of the crack with maximum depth in some cases, however, it was not observed in other cases. lt had no relationship to the material hardness and the impact load magnitude whether the white layer was observed or not. Consequently, the effect of white layer on crack initiation does not seem to be essential on this test method; 6. From the result of RCF test of TPs without flat, 5x105 fatigue strength increases in proportion to Vickers hardness; 7. Spalling property is determined by impact load and RCF property. The impact load which occurred due to flat depended on the shape of flat, however, did not depend on material. Whereas, RCF property depended on material. The lowest hardness material had the shortest life at the same Hertzian stress on RCF test. The life of spalling seems to be determined by RCF property at the Hertzian stress magnified by the impact load.
