The stainless steel market for car exhaust systems, estimated at about 300000 tons/year in Europe, is strongly increasing in volume with a growing rate of about 25% in the next five years. This high growth is related to the substitution of carbon steel in exhaust pipe and cast iron in manifold by stainless steel due to the evolution of car manufacturer requirements. The automotive exhaust system can be divided into two parts: 1) upper part from the manifold to the catalytic converter exposed to high temperature which needs a steel with good resistance to thermal fatigue, creep and oxidation, and 2) lower part from intermediate tube to tail pipe exposed to lower temperature but which requires a steel with good resistance to corrosion (road salt on the outer side, condensate in the inner side). To give an adapted answer to the market's needs especially for the upper part of exhaust system, the new Nb stabilised ferritic stainless steel X1CrNb15 has been developed combining a good resistance to high temperature with improved formability. An extensive characterisation of the material properties of X1CrNb15 is given. With a resistance to high temperature as good as 1.4509 grade, X1CrNb15 has an improved formability and can be proposed for more complex shaped parts. Compared to austenitic stainless steel grades like 1.4828, it can offer a better lifetime in service up to 950 deg C for a lower price. Industrially produced, X1CrNb15 will be included in the next revision of European standard 10088. (VDEh)
