This paper will present results from vibration measurement using a technique called Electronic Speckle Pattem Interferometry (ESPI). ESPI is a well-established technique, in research as well as industry, for non-contact full field measurement of deformations of various objects under different loading conditions. We will discuss the measurement technique and results from experiments involving the dynamic measurement of brake discs, car body panels and catalytic converters. It was demonstrated that three-dimensional ESPI using a pulsed laser is a very useful tool for the analysis of the dynamic behaviour of various objects. In the field of brake squeal analysis this system allows easy access to the complete three-dimensional behaviour of the squealing brake disc. The measurement time involved in measuring car body vibration can be greatly reduced by using ESPI to provide instant full field measurement data. The ESPI technique has the potential to investigate and optimise complicated structures like electrically heated catalytic converters. The combination of a non-contact and a full-field measurement on very difficult and complex surfaces along with multi-dimensional measuring enables the quick and effective development of solutions for vibration problems. The demand to reduce the overall noise level in and outside the car requires detailed knowledge about the vibration behaviour of different components. The versatility of ESPI allows the identification of sources of such vibration and noise.
