Adaptive damping devices have received signifikant attention in recent years because they offer improved performance over passive devices and because they have active control without high power requirements or instability problems. Magnetorheological (MR) fluids can be profitably employed in adaptive dampers, particularly because a significant variation in flow properties with low-power requirements and no external actuators or mechanical parts can be obtained. At the moment some linear shock absorber are already available on the market even if only for specific applications like truck seat suspensions and race-cars. In this paper design and experimental tests of an innovative rotary MR damper will be presented. The rotary architecture, patented by C.R.F., presents relevant advantages in respect to the linear one. With this solution low working pressure and low flow velocity through valves, with high improvement in controllability and response times, no elastic energy storage in compensating chamber and seals durability can be achieved. Thanks to this innovative components, different new architectures for adaptive suspension system can be developed, in particular the rotary solution permits to have planar distribution of the suspension components with a consequent space optimization and size reduction.
