Actuators are widely spread in aerospace applications. They are used to deform control surfaces on flight vehicles, to adapt the shape of an aeronautical structure, to release payload from the launcher vehicle, and to extend and retract high lift devices and the landing gear. Usually hydraulich, electric or at some release mechanisms pyrotechnic actuators are used in existing flight vehicles. More recently actuators using ''smart'' materials came into focus. An emerging technology with a big potential is the realization of smart lightweight structures. Nevertheless the main challenge is to prove the reliability of these structures and their ability to fulfil all airworthiness requirements. If there is a conventional solution they also have to show their superiority to that. With this new class of actuators it is possible to affect the structure even further. This paper presents an overview of common actuators used in today's structures and will expand the focus to new developments in this area.
