Automotive OEM's have announced plans to improve passenger vehicle fuel economy 25 % by year 2005. Hybridized power train vehicles are now part of the product mix and they continue to penetrate conventional vehicle markets. As hybrid and 42 V vehicle electrical systems develop and mature, the economic and engineering arguments for advanced batteries becomes stronger. Several desirable vehicle options and the systems required to support these functions are described in this paper. Attendant to these functions are the matching battery attributes. This paper addresses non-idling passenger vehicles, their load requirements and impact on the battery subsystem. The integrated starter generator (ISG) concept is the lead application of new technology targeting fuel consumption reduction below the levels projected by conventional aerodynamic, driveline efficiency and weight actions. The need to sustain vehicle electrical loads during engine off periods, accept high levels of regen energy during braking and provide for engine torque boosting dictates the battery energy storage rating. Advanved batteries in automotive application with their need for charge control maintenance, energy management and diagnostics require a vehicle infrastructure having communications networks and high level vehicle system controller architectures.
