Tribochemical processes and 'third body' formation on the fricting surfaces at braking railroad vehicles were studied experimentally using a gliding CuKalpha X-ray beam. The brake shoes made of composite materials (8-1-66, 328-303) and cast iron (SC-15) were used. The 60GS steel was used as counter-contact material. An increase in surface microhardnes and surface layer thickness was observed after the friction process.
